Fixed Periods for F Students, J Exchange Visitors, and I Visas

US Department of Homeland Security has published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to change for F Students, J Exchange Visitors and I Information Workers from “duration of status" to a fixed admission period which would require filing extensions. The goal is to have students finish their student status inside a 4-year period but they would be able to request an extension of status.  The forms controlling the F-1 status and J-1 status are the Form I-20 and DS-2019 respectively.  Students have 60 days to depart the US after completing their studies or authorized practical training program, and Exchange Visitors have 30 days to depart the U.S. after completing their specified activity.
